Tonawanda News — 2003 — 10 years ago

• Tonawanda residents voted by a 4 to 1 margin to transfer the city water system to the Erie County Water Authority.

• The Amvets Niagara Frontier Post 26 sponsored a 2-day gun show.

1988 — 25 years ago

• Bruce Anderson, Jeffrey Andrews and Timothy Goulah were recognized by the NT Board of Education for receiving A grades in four languages — English, French, Japanese and Russian.

• A portion of Tonawanda’s Central Dispatch was knocked out of service when a National Fuel Gas crew severed a cable while digging in the RiverEdge area.

1963 — 50 years ago

• Ted Kennedy, at age 30, was headed for Washington to begin his first term in the U. S. Senate. His two brothers were already in Washington filling the positions of President and Attorney General.

• The free parking lot in Adam Street was being cited as the cause for a decline in Tonawanda parking meter revenue for 1962.

1943 — 70 years ago

• Robert Hardy was the first serviceman from the Tonawandas to be officially cited for valor. The citation issued by General Nimitz followed the bombing of Kiska.

• Citing an oil shortage, the Office of Price Administration put into place driving restrictions. Unnecessary driving to meetings, athletic events, theatres, concerts and the like was prohibited and violators would have their gas coupons confiscated for the duration of the war.
