Man in Tuesday crash said foot was stuck

— — Two men in their 80s were involved in a pair of one-car accidents early Tuesday evening that caused significant damage to two different buildings.

At 5:45 p.m., an 86-year-old Town of Tonawanda resident said his foot became stuck when, after parking along Main Street, his vehicle lurched forward striking an antique shop at 59 Main St.

“He thought he had  put it in park and (the car) jumped up over the curb and crashed into the building,” City of Tonawanda Police Lt. Fredric Foels said.

The man was not injured, though several antique dishes were smashed inside Sweet Briar Antique store. Minor damage was reported to the brick work on the building’s exterior.

Foels said no charges are pending against the driver, who according to a police report told officers he uses both feet to operate the brake and gas pedals in his car. The car was towed from the scene.

About 20 minutes later, an 85-year-old man drove through a garage on Fletcher Street. The driver refused medical attention and was apparently unharmed.

“He drove right through the back wall, through the entire garage and into his neighbor’s fence,” Foels said. “So in the span of an hour we had a crash into the antique store and a crash through a garage. I guess the good news was no one was injured. There was damage to buildings but no one got hurt.”

Police have not released the names of either driver, as no charges are pending.
