'Shear' standstill in Wheatfield

WHEATFIELD — An accident on Niagara Falls Boulevard in Wheatfield Thursday shut down traffic while crews worked to clear a utility pole laying across all four lanes of the road.

State Police handled the call, which came in at 10 a.m. when a 45-year-old Wheatfield woman veered from the southbound lane, striking the pole and shearing it at its base before continuing on to hit a tree outside a nearby residence in the 3100 block.

The pole was toppled and lay across all lanes of the roadway on a section of the boulevard between Mavis Drive and Krueger Road, police said.

“She just went off the road and struck a utility pole that went down in the middle of the road and severed several wires,” Trooper Sergio Cruz said.

The woman refused medical attention at the scene but has been charged with operating an unlicensed, uninspected and unregistered vehicle with swapped plates, according to police.

“When the troopers pulled up she was conscious and alert and just trying to figure out what happened,” Cruz said citing police reports. “The vehicle sustained some pretty serious damage. She’s lucky she wasn’t hurt.”

He said other accidents were also reported in the area while the road was closed.

“That pretty much set off a chain reaction,” he said.

The News was not aware of any other accidents in the area following the crash. State Police stayed on scene while utility crews worked throughout the day to clean up the mess.

“There were a couple in the area but we didn’t investigate them. We were down at the boulevard scene,” an officer who responded to the accident said.

All four lanes were closed for seven hours before being reopened shortly after 5 p.m.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
