Tonawanda native Jim Pernick was recently named interim manager for the struggling Hilbert College men’s baseball team.
Pernick, who played at St. Joe’s and Niagara University, takes over the club following a 1-9 start.
His son Jim has been one of the most consistent hitters for the Hawks this season.
Pernick has plenty of experience on the managerial end, coaching from little league, travel teams, as well as local AAABA and MUNY AAA leagues.
In 2009, his Ken-HY AAABA team reached the national title game in Johnstown, Pa., while his MUNY AAA team advanced to the 2010 NABF championship game.
He’s also served as compliance coordinator with the MUNY AAA.
Pernick was an all-catholic pitcher and catcher his senior year with the Marauders. He was also a three-year starter with the Purple Eagles, playing both catcher and third base. He served as one of Niagara’s team captains during his senior season.
Currently, Pernick is a private professional baseball instructor teaching at Upper Deck in Hamburg. He previously was an instructor with Island Dugout on Grand Island.
