THEATER: '42nd Street' in Niagara Falls

By Alyssa Harpst

The classic Broadway musical “42nd Street” comes to the stage this weekend at the Niagara Falls High School Performing Arts Center, presented by the Niagara Fine Arts Program.

Directed by Maureen A. Pusateri and choreographed by Gracie Schupp, the show marks the NFAP’s 15th anniversary. A better show could not have been chosen, according to public relations manager Jennifer Wrobel.

“We feel incredibly proud,” she said. “As our 15th anniversary show, we wanted to make sure that it was something big, and that’s exactly what ‘42nd Street’ is.”

The show, set in 1933, honors the dreams and aspirations of people everywhere. Romance, rejection and triumph set the mood as a group of young performers are followed through the auditioning process and work to present a hit show. “Lullaby of Broadway” and “Shuffle Off to Buffalo” are just some of the songs that can be heard in this production.

“‘42nd Street’ is a show that celebrates old Broadway,” Wrobel said.

The cast and crew has worked hard as opening night grows closer.

“There are five weeks from auditions to opening night,” she said. “There are complicated dance numbers, costumes, sets, vocals, etc. You name it, we’ve (done) it. We work hard to put something on stage that we can be proud of.”

Together with the performers, the director and choreographer have worked to make certain what is seen on stage is the best production possible, Wrobel said.

“They both work tirelessly to ensure we are putting on a production they can be proud of,” she said. “As with any production, you try to keep classic elements audiences may expect to see, but also add something new to make sure that it will be different and memorable. We’re fortunate enough to have a wealth of local talent that brings the show to life.”

The production is one the entire family can attend and find entertaining.

“The audience should expect a great time,” Wrobel said. “(It’s) an inspiring and entertaining show that everyone can enjoy.”
