Aquasol plans to expand

— — The owner of Aquasol Corporation met with members of the North Tonawanda city council this week to discuss the company’s plans to expand.

Owner Mike Hacikyan gained preliminary approval for an easement along a small strip of land known as Kent Street, along their headquarters near the corner of Oliver and Thompson streets, in order to run utilities.

The company, Mayor Rob Ortt said, is a feather in the city’s cap, with clients and business for their water-soluble products around the world.

“It’s really a great company. An international company,” Ortt said. “You’ve got engineers and good paying jobs.”

Aquasol’s overall plans include moving their main operations from its Thompson Street location to the new Buffalo Bolt business park, where two lots have already been purchased.

The existing facility may then be converted into a smaller, incubator business park for other firms looking to take off.

“We want to do everything they can to help them,” Ortt said.

Also at Tuesday’s  meeting, Third-Ward Alderman Eric Zadzilka proposed changing property zoning in a residential area through which the proposed Meadow Drive Extension would run.

The plan, which is moving forward despite issues raised last year over wetland mapping in the area, would extend Meadow Drive to Erie Avenue. Currently, an area  between Erie Avenue and Niagara Falls Boulevard allows light manufacturing to exist.

But because the area is mostly residential, Ortt said concerns have been raised over the potential for such buildings to spring up near homes once the thoroughfare is extended.

The Council also formally approved the city’s new Fire Chief John Lapham  in special session Tuesday.

“Everything’s in order when he actually takes over on Friday,” Ortt said.

Lapham was selected to replace Fire Chief Joseph Krantz, who will retire Friday after 43 years with the city’s fire department. Krantz served as chief for the past four years.

Lapham, himself a 20-year veteran of the department, will be promoted from assistant chief.
