Benjamin C. Helwig

NORTH TONAWANDA —  

Benjamin C. Helwig, age 90, of North Tonawanda and formerly of the City of Tonawanda, Tuesday, October 30, 2012 at Beechwood Nursing Home. A lifelong resident of the Tonawandas, he was the husband of the late Pearl (Rachow) Helwig; father of the late Loren and Jeffrey Rachow; son of the late Charles and Ida Helwig; and brother of the late Ruth Stacy. Benjamin was a 1939 graduate of Tonawanda High School and was a US Army veteran serving during World War II. He was a former owner of H & H Superette Market in Tonawanda and was also employed as a Letter Carrier for the Tonawanda Post Office for 23 years, retiring in 1985. He was a member of Salem United Church of Christ, Tonawandas' Post 264 American Legion, Frontiersmen Post 7545 VFW and the Union Hook and Ladder Volunteer Fire Co.
He is survived by two daughters-in-law, Marilyn (the late Loren) Rachow and Lydia (the late Jeffrey) Rachow; five grandchildren, Michelle, Michael, Eric, Aaron and Justin; a great-granddaughter, Annie; and his sister, Elizabeth (the late Gilbert) Miller. Also survived by several nieces and nephews.
Friends may call on Friday from 3:00 - 7:00 PM at John O. Roth Funeral Home, Inc., 25 William St. (between Morgan & Broad Sts.) in Tonawanda, where funeral services will be conducted at 10 AM on Saturday by the Rev. Jeremy Lopez. Burial will be in Elmlawn Cemetery. Flowers gratefully declined. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice Buffalo, Inc. or to the WPCA of Erie County.
