Walter K. Gorbach

LEWISTON — Walter K. Gorbach, of the Town of Cambria, NY, passed away on Saturday, December 1, 2012, in Mount St. Mary's Hospital, Lewiston, NY.

He was born in Immenstadt, Germany, on  March 30, 1931, the son of the late Karl and       Hedwig (Lindner) Gorbach.

Mr. Gorbach grew up in Kempten, Germany, where he apprenticed as a chef after World War II, working in Cologne, Germany and Zurich, Switzerland.

He came to the United States in January of 1954 and was a  chef at the Red Coach Inn. He served with the US Army from 1956  to 1958.

After returning from the service he began working again at the Red Coach and at the Niagara Frontier Country Club. Mr. Gorbach later owned and operated the Jenss Coffee Shop and Royal Chef Restaurant from 1961, until retiring in 1997. During that time he was  well known as a caterer for local businesses and private functions. He also ran the food service at the Youngstown Yacht Club from 1976 to 1981.

He was  a board member  with the New York State Restaurant Association and the Western New York  Restaurant Association, were he served as president  in 1976.

Mr. Gorbach enjoyed spending time with his family, oil painting, gardening  and traveling.

He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Suzanne P. (Payne) Gorbach; three sons, Michael Gorbach of North Tonawanda; Gerald (Gina) Gorbach of Hillsborough, NJ; and Fritz (April) Gorbach of North Tonawanda, NY; four grandchildren, Lt. Daniel Gorbach, US Army; Jacob Scouten, William and Michael Gorbach; three brothers, Werner (Heidi) Gorbach, Rudolf Gorbach, Herman (Gloria) Gorbach; one sister, Gaby (Klaus) Leopold; one sister-in-law, Christa Gorbach, all of Germany; his beloved puppy, Lizzy; also many nieces and nephews. Mr. Gorbach was the husband of the late Hannelore (Neumann) Gorbach and brother of the late Hannes Gorbach.

The family will be present on Thursday from 3-7 PM at the RHONEY FUNERAL HOME, 901 Cayuga Street, LEWISTON, NY, where funeral services with military honors will be held at   7:00 PM, with the Rev. Michael  G. Uebler officiating. Memorials may be made in his name to Mount St. Mary's Hospital.
