James S. Yates

NORTH TONAWANDA —  

James S. Yates, age 90, went peacefully to his heavenly home on November 7, 2012 at Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital with family at his side.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 55 years, Barbara; his children, Diane, James J. (Ann), Dennis and Ronald (Donna) Yates; his "favorite" granddaughter, Kathryn Yates; brother, Martin (Rita) Yates; and several nieces and nephews. James was preceded in death by his son, Ensign Thomas J. Yates; and sisters, Nellie Vona and Dorothy Cleer.
James was born in North Tonawanda on December 4, 1921, son of the late Sam and Ida Yates. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II. In 1951, he joined the North Tonawanda Police Department where he attained the rank of Captain and retired in 1983 as Chief of Detectives. He was a graduate of Erie Community Technical Institute in 1965.
Friends may call at the WATTENGEL Funeral Home, 307 Oliver Street, North Tonawanda on FRIDAY, November 9th from 4-8 PM. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Jude the Apostle Parish, 800 Niagara Falls Blvd., on SATURDAY at 10 AM. Burial will be in Acacia Park Cemetery.
