SOUND OFF: Published Feb. 9, 2010

I wrote in a few days ago about blaming the driver of the green sedan, and I read today that someone is trying to pass the blame to the poor girl who was brutally killed. This is absolutely uncalled for: The driver is the one who should be 100 percent aware of what he is doing every time he gets behind the wheel, he is the one driving a 4,000-pound bullet. If she made a mistake, then it is still the fault of the driver. The driver got to go home and see their family again, and the girl’s family was not granted that simple pleasure.

Because our school system, both locally and generally, is a frequent topic in Sound Off and the economy, state and federal, is a constant source of comment, two recent articles have prompted my letter. Namely, the budget deficit (front page of the Tonawanda News, Feb. 4) but much more importantly, an article by Joe Klein in Time magazine (Feb. 8) on “Failing Our Schools” which every New York state parent with children in public schools, every property owner and all income taxpayers should read. It is sad that teacher’s unions can wield such power to the detriment of the public at large.

Research clearly shows happiness at work increases productivity and effectiveness. So, employers, bosses, managers: Please read that first line again. Everyone else: Stop slamming teachers, municipal workers, auto workers and any job you have never had and don’t understand but you think it looks easy. No one has it easy. Think about it more. It looks easy because you have never done it.
