SOUND OFF: Published November 19

To the person who doesn't understand why leaves shouldn't be put in the street - there are several reasons. First, when cars park on top of them, the catalytic converter can start a fire. When it rains, they end up in the storm sewers. When it is dry, traffic blows them around.

As a supporter of the Town of Tonawanda Veterans Memorial I am very very disappointed, as are other veterans I have spoken to. My disappointment is the fact that no dates appear with the names on this memorial. Did others or I serve in the Civil War, Spanish American War, World War I, World War II, Korean War, Vietnam War or any war since? Why are there no dates of service? How much more would it have taken to place service dates next to names? The memorial in itself is very nice, but I am sure you can see the disappointment we veterans feel. I am a very disappointed Town of Tonawanda veteran.

I just wanted to say now the election here in NT is over hopefully we can finally move forward. I laughed when I saw the mayor’s comments, how he was so surprised about his loss. Well he played with our taxes like it was the lottery.

A thank-you to Mayor Larry Soos. I’d like to thank him for being a straight-shooter, free of political games. And I’d like to thank him for starting and expediting the following projects on his watch: Walmart, Walgreens, the Remington loft apartments, the Briarwood, Degler Drive and William Street subdivisions, Marshall Drive has been redone, the power coalition, the resurfacing of many streets in our city and new sidewalks after many years of neglect. Also, the October storm reimbursement from FEMA, combining the city clerk and treasurer jobs, a task force to look into dilapidated homes, and future industrial development at the Buffalo Bolt site. His work for our city will not be overlooked.

Looks like the government can’t get it right on the flu shots. Not only can’t we get the H1N1 vaccine, we can’t get the regular vaccine either. I hope if this government insurance goes through, the government does a lot better job, but if this is any indication on how things are going to go, I’d say no to government health coverage.

I think Nancy Pelosi’s bank accounts should be looked into. She’s probably getting paid by the insurance and pharmaceutical companies. Seems like Washington is getting to be run just like the rest of the banks and Wall Street: It’s run by greed and what’s on their own agenda, and not what’s best for regular Americans.

•••

You’ve got to love Mayor Soos’ comments in defeat.

•••

When I picked up the paper on Oct. 27 I was so surprised to see the athletic director was on her way out, then I read it was with the schools and not the city’s director. What a shame.

Third ward residents in North Tonawanda beware! Eric Zadzilka just won the council seat without literally doing any campaigning at all. Upon asking numerous third ward residents if anyone had Eric Zadzilka knock on their door or leave campaign paperwork at their homes, the answer was a resounding no. Even his neighbors in Wurlitzer Park responded no, as well. I made two phone calls to him that were not returned. I bet after an initial honeymoon period of being on the council wears off, his attendance will begin to wane. This is sad because third warders have always had good representation on the council. Third warders, keep your eyes and ears open and demand good representation on the council.!

If you keep taking signals down on Nash Road, it will become a regular speedway. Don’t forget: It’s still a city street, with side streets driveways and businesses.

I think the North Tonawanda school district should look into requiring school uniforms. I think if the school board members walked around the high school and saw how some of these students dress they’d be appalled, to say the least. No school dress code is being enforced. They should consider the pros and cons of bringing back school uniforms.
