Niagara Falls — Class is officially back in session at Niagara University, although it’s not just students, but Sabre prospects who are focused on learning.

The team’s second run at Niagara’s Dwyer Arena started Monday, starting a week of scrimmages and drills. Today’s session from 3 to 6 p.m. is open to the public.

Among those on the ice will be top defenseman Tyler Myers, the 6-foot-8 defenseman who the Sabres took in last year’s first round of the NHL Draft.

Myers suited up on Monday for a closed session, one of more than 40 prospects to do so.

“I’m going to come into camp this year working for a spot on the team, and I’m going to do everything I can on and off the ice,” said Myers, who heard that general manager Darcy Regier gave the up-and-coming defenseman a legitimate shot of making this year’s roster. “It’s always nice to hear things like that coming from the Sabres. Whenever you do hear things like that it makes you want to work even harder.”

Although this year’s first-round pick Zack Kassian was not on the ice, most others were, including South Buffalo’s Tim Kennedy, who has become a fixture at the event.

Kennedy played well in Portland for the Sabres’ American Hockey League affiliate last season, but would prefer to make the jump to the big club this year.

“I remember when I was one of the young ones,” Kennedy said. “Now, I’m one of the oldest.”

WHEN: Starts today, but public sessions run today through Thursday afternoons (3 to 6 p.m.) and Friday morning (11 a.m. to 2 p.m.)
