HS ROUNDUP (Sept. 9): Radkiewicz, Moore pace Tonawanda

Tara Radkiewicz and Kaitlynn Moore each recorded two goals and two assists as the Tonawanda Warriors opened the girls soccer season with an 8-0 blowout win over JFK in ECIC IV action.

Caitlin Bezlin added a pair of goals for THS (1-0 overall). Jamie Idziak (one goal, one assist) and Arielle Young (one goal) also contributed to the win. Deanna Bowers got the shutout.

Starpoint 5, Pioneer 1

Catie Hale poured in two goals and Liz Wilson, Katelyn Mazgaj and Kristi DeLabio all added one as the Lady Spartans earned the ECIC III win. Starpoint is now 1-0. Kiley Titus scored for Pioneer (1-1).

Field Hockey

Wilson 5, Ken East 0

Sam Rew had a pair of goals to lift the Lakewomen to the win in their Niagara-Orleans League opener. Also for Wilson (1-0 N-O), Erica Moltrup, Julie Rohring and Kiersten Simmons had a single tally. Megan Buzzard made nine saves for the shutout. East is 0-1.

Medina 5, Newfane 2

Maddy Feltz had two goals and an assist as the Mustangs went to 1-0 in the N-O. Newfane falls to 0-1.

Akron 8, Ken West 0

Kierstyn Sturmer had a hat trick to lift the Tigers to the N-O victory. Shannon Wimnney earned the shutout in net for Akron (1-0 N-O). West is 0-1.

Golf

Akron 213, Wilson 253

Eli Cobti earned medalist honors for Akron (1-1 N-O) with an even-par 36 in the Niagara-Orleans matchup at Dande Farms. Jake Rohring carried Wilson (1-1) with a 42.

Newfane 227, Medina 241

Erik Taheri medaled with a 42 to lead defending N-O champion Newfane to the win at Oak Run. Eric Wright (44), T.J. Manhardt (46) and Nick Nickerson (47) also tallied low rounds for Newfane (2-0 N-O). Justin Lewis shot a 44 and Brad Zacher had a 45 to lead Medina (1-1).

Barker 256, Albion 272

Mitch Luckman shot a 47 to lead Barker (1-1 N-O) to the win at Hickory Ridge. For Albion (1-1), Jonathan Krieger finished with a 49.

Girls Volleyball

JFK 3, Tonawanda 0

Danielle Azzarelli had five service points, three blocks and one ace but it was not enough as the Lady Warriors dropped their ECIC IV opener, 12-25, 15-25, 12-25.

Starpoint 3, East Aurora 0

Senior Julie Hitzgess led the Lady Spartans to the ECIC interdivision win with 16 service points and four kills in the 25-17, 25-19, 25-16 sweep. Also for Starpoint (2-0 overall), Lindsay Welsh had eight service points and six kills and Veronica Crosby tallied 12 kills. East Aurora is 0-1.

Boys Volleyball

St. Mary’s 3, Starpoint 0

The Spartans came up short in their first-ever boys volleyball match, 25-11, 25-11, 25-15. Senior setter John Billingsley contributed 12 assists for Starpoint (0-1 overall). No information was provided for St. Mary’s.
