COLLEGE ROUNDUP: CHA honors Mironov, Noonan

After a strong weekend in which the Niagara University men’s hockey team twice defeated league rival Robert Morris, senior forward Egor Mironov and sophomore goalie Chris Noonan received honors from College Hockey America.

Mironov was named the league’s Offensive Player of the Week, while Noonan picked up Defensive Player of the Week accolades.

Mironov earned his first weekly honor after a three-goal effort over the weekend against RMU. He scored the game-winning goal Friday night and had a pair of goals in Saturday’s win, bringing his career total to 51.

Noonan nabbed his second CHA award after backstopping the Purple Eagles’ two victories while posting a 1.50 goals-against average and a .953 save percentage.

In addition to the weekly awards, NU placed 13 players on the CHA All-Academic team: Ryan Annesley, Adam Avramenko, Jim Burichin, Tyler Gotto, Bryan Haczyk, Mironov, David Ross, Paul Zanette, Dan Baco, Sam Goodwin, Robert Martini, Noonan and Ryan Olidis.

The fourth-seeded Purple Eagles open the 2010 CHA Tournament on their home ice at Dwyer Arena. Face-off is 7 p.m. Friday against No. 1 Bemidji State.

Individual game tickets are now on sale for the two-day event by calling the Niagara ticket office at 286-8499.

BASEBALL

UB takes Morehead series

Buffalo topped Morehead State 13-9 on Sunday to win its weekend series with the Kentucky school. Senior Jacob Rosenbeck (Medina) crushed a solo homer in the second and reliever Brian Pullyblank earned the win.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Simpson honored

Geneseo senior forward Brandon Simpson (Wilson) was named honorable mention all-SUNYAC after leading the Blue Knights in scoring with 15.4 points per game and rebounding (6.7). He was seventh in the SUNYAC in scoring.

MEN’S TENNIS

Florida Atlantic 5, UB 2

The Bulls scored the opening doubles point and picked up a singles win from George Tibil, but it wasn’t enough against Sun Belt Conference member Florida Atlantic. Buffalo moved up in the regional rankings, however, and is tied for the No. 10 spot with Penn in the rankings released by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. It’s the first time UB has appeared in the rankings.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

UB 6, James Madison 1

Denise Harijanto led the Bulls to the win by winning her match at first singles and pairing up with Aleksandra Petrova to win at first doubles as UB began its spring break trip on a winning note.

Tonawanda welcomes four more on cherished Wall of Fame
Chris “Mr. Tonawanda” Slauson (Class of 1998), Tom Perkovich (’99), John White (’75) and Jim Keller (’54) were enshrined as part of the 2012 Tonawanda High School Athletic Wall of Fame class prior to Tonawanda’s 69-45 win over Eden Thursday night inside the George Miller Gymnasium.
