HS ROUNDUP (Feb. 3): Larson rolls a near-NFL record

North Tonawanda’s Brianna Larson rolled games of 258, 258 and 257 for a 773 series, the highest set in Western New York among girls this season, as the Lady Jacks cruised to their 13th Niagara Frontier League win in as many tries this season.

Larson’s score is the second-highest in NFL history — Savannah Zientara had a 788 in 2006 — and it helped NT defeat Lewiston-Porter 6-1 on Tuesday at Tonawanda Bowling Center.

Kellie Thomsen rolled a 191-522 for the Lady Jacks, who won the pin count 3,258-2,778. Krystina Ventry rolled a 196-497 for Lew-Port (5-8).

Ken West 4, Ken East 3

Ashley Fries had a 247-641 set and Kaitlin Symula added a 247-614 for West in its NFL win. Taking the pin count 3,047-2,970, West improved its league record to 4-9. Allison Marchese (216-622) and Megan Michaels (221-574) were the high scorers for East (4-9).

N-W 4, Niagara Falls 3

Vienna Mills (245-626) and Taylor Klis (198-534) had the high series for Wheatfield in NFL action at Bowl-O-Drome. Amber Passero added a 232 game for the Falcons (10-3 NFL) as they won the pin count 3,041-2,915. For the Falls (5-8), Jill Smith had a 199-541 set and Hayley Johnson rolled a 223 game.

Lockport 6, Grand Island 1

Bridget Masiello rolled a 236-605 set and Brittany Wright finished with a 201-580 for Lockport in Niagara Frontier League action at Island Lanes. The Lady Lions (9-4 NFL) won the total pin count 2,917-2,577. Jenelle Walters posted a 193 single game for Grand Island (2-11) while Shawnice Cameron had a 176.

Boys Basketball

Niagara-Wheatfield 55, Ken East 53

Kyle Henry made a 17-footer with two seconds remaining to lift the Falcons (3-11 overall, 2-9 NFL), who overcame a nine-point halftime deficit. Shawn Haseley led the way with 15 points, seven rebounds and two steals. Henry had 13 points and Kevin McTyere, who hit a shot to tie the game at 53-53, scored a dozen. Jake Hughes added 10 boards in the win. Dante Bono led Ken East (4-11, 1-10) with 14 points.

Grand Island 49, Kenmore West 39

Jonas Stalyga (16 points, 10 rebounds) and Bobby Ross (six points, seven steals) led Grand Island on both sides of the ball in the Vikings’ NFL win. Kolby Banker added 13 points for Grand Island (8-5 overall, 6-4 NFL). Wade Josiah had 20 points and Ryan Grandits chipped in 10 for West.

Junior Varsity

n Grant Haseley had 20 points and John Ayers had 15 as Niagara-Wheatfield defeated Ken East 66-54. Quinton Marshall scored 21 for East.

Girls Basketball

Tonawanda 37, JFK 35

Meghan Kossow had 14 points, 16 rebounds and four steals as Tonawanda narrowly won the ECIC IV matchup. Deanna Bowers added 10 points, five assists and three steals for the Lady Warriors (11-4 overall, 6-3 ECIC IV) and also sank a pair of free throws with 1.9 seconds left in the game to break a 35-35 tie.

Lyndsey Baker scored 10 points and Cara Smith added nine for JFK.

Lew-Port 52, Niagara Falls 51

Chelsea O’Laughlin hit a deep 3-pointer at the buzzer to win it for the lancers (8-6, 5-5 NFL). O’Laughlin led Lew-Port with 15 points, while Kristine Ripson had 13 points and 10 rebounds and Ryleigh Fitzgerald had 12 points and eight rebounds. Chamari Russell led Niagara Falls (1-12, 0-10) with 16 points and Khadijah Caldwell had 13.

Grand Island 53, Kenmore West 18

Kallie Banker had 18 points and five assists to lead the Vikings (8-2 NFL) to the home win. Danielle Wergzyn netted 10 points, Mary Scherrer grabbed 13 rebounds and Cassie Oursler just missed a double-double with nine points and nine rebounds. Jenna Panepinto led Ken West (3-7 NFL) with six points.

Lockport 65, NT 24

Lea Sobieraski canned a game-high 19 points, adding eight rebounds and five steals as Lockport led 24-2 at the end of the first quarter before cruising to their 11th straight NFL win without a loss. Also for the Lady Lions (12-1 overall), Caroline Randall had 14 points and five assists and Casey Olipant had eight points. Sarah Hansen and Mary Ellen Ringler scored seven apiece for the Lady Jacks (1-10 NFL).

Akron 53, CSAT 31

Kiersyn Sturmer scored 15 points and Lindsey Schmid added 14 to lead the way for Akron (7-4 N-O). CSAT dropped to 1-10 in the league.

Starpoint 45, West Seneca East 29

Natalie Whitman had 16 points and Ashley Wallace chipped in with 13 for the Spartans (9-4, 7-3 ECIC II). Catie Hale scored nine points.

Junior Varsity

n Katie Furdak scored 12 points and Chelsey “Chauncey” Milleville added nine points as Niagara-Wheatfield beat Kenmore East 42-29. Julia Snitzer had 11 in the losing effort.

Boys Bowling

NT 6, Lew-Port 1

Tyler Skoczylas had a 278-769 set, the second-highest series in the NFL this year, as NT picked up the victory at Tonawanda Bowling Center. Wes Thompson rolled a 231-667 and Josh Horab a 237-654 for the Lumberjacks (8-5 NFL), who won the pin count 3,841-3,403. Craig Plante (264-702) and Mike Grannis (213-617) were tops for Lew-Port (4-9).

Grand Island 5, Lockport 2

Scott Suszczynski rolled a 265-703 series and Alex Strauss added a 238-679 for Grand Island in the Niagara Frontier League matchup at Island Lanes. The Vikings (10-3 NFL) took the final pin count 3,791-3,635. For Lockport, Greg Priebe had a 267-693 and Matt Wengrzycki finished with a 243-667.

Ken East 4, Ken West 3

Russell Williams (232-626) and Ricky Rambuss (223-622) led East to a 3,367-3,355 pin count win in the NFL contest. For West, Rob Ricketts had a 232-632 and Ryan Sanders chipped in a 233-612. Both teams are now 3-10 in the league.

Niagara Falls 4, N-W 3

Jake Wisor (287-668), Steve Biondi (225-665), Tim Drylewski (267-652) and Eric Hangst (223-644) notched the high series for the Falls in their NFL win at Bowl-O-Drome. The Wolverines (11-2 NFL) overcame a 129-pin deficit in the third game en route to a 3,733-3,585 pin count win and at least a share of the league title. Chuck Bifano rolled a 279-700 for Wheatfield (3-10).

Wrestling

Lew-Port 66, NT 21

D.J. Marshall (103 pounds) and Pete Cianchetti (160) won by pin for Lew-Port in the Niagara Frontier League matchup. For NT (0-7 NFL), Ryan Drafs (125), Wally Maziarz (145) and Tyler Bruce (152) picked up pinfall wins. The Lancers are now 4-3 in the league.
