There hasn’t been much for the Cardinal O’Hara boys basketball team to celebrate this season, but a thrilling overtime victory on Monday certainly will serve as a highlight for the Hawks.
Daz Knight hit a runner in the lane at the buzzer to give Cardinal O’Hara a 64-62 nonleague win at Holland, which boasted a 10-4 overall record coming into the game to the Hawks’ 2-16 mark.
Knight finished with 27 points and Xavier Evans had 20 for Cardinal O’Hara, which trailed 29-26 at halftime. Jordan Farrant had a game-high 28 for Holland (10-5).
Girls Basketball
Mount St. Mary 55, Nardin 48
Brianna Johnson hit 13 of 18 free throw attempts to finish with 18 points as the Thunder snapped a five-game losing streak, improving to 11-10 overall.
Aaron Shabazz had 13 points and 11 rebounds for the Mount, which edged Nardin in the first and fourth quarters to win. Also for MSM, Jasmine Shabazz had nine points and 17 rebounds, and Mary Emminger chipped in nine points.
Lockport 35, Grand Island 32
The Lady Lions held on to clinch their fifth straight Niagara Frontier League title. Lockport (14-1, 13-0 NFL) led 27-12 at halftime, but a poor second half allowed the Vikings (11-5, 10-3) to claw away at the lead, outscoring the Lions 11-5 in the third quarter and 9-3 in the fourth.
Caroline Randall led Lockport with 11 points. Sophomore Marissa Guyton canned nine points and added seven rebounds, while senior forward Lea Sobieraski added eight points and eight boards.
Grand Island’s Kallie Banker led all scorers with 13 points. Danielle Wegrzyn added eight for GI.
WRESTLING
DeVaughn wins All-Catholic title
Niagara Catholic’s David DeVaughn won a 3-1 decision over St. Joe’s Liam Kearney in the 140-pound championship match at Sunday’s All-Catholic Championships at St. Francis.
The Patriots placed five of their seven wrestlers at the event. Akshil Patel (103 pounds), King Fatumnbi (160) and Justin Waas (285) took second and Brian Brantigan (145) came in third. The grapplers will now compete at the state championships on Long Island.
