Tonawanda News — Lorenzo Zaccaria scored twice, including the game-winner, as Kenmore East edged North Tonawanda, 4-3 in Niagara Frontier League soccer action Wednesday afternoon.

Zaccaria’s first tally gave East a 3-1 lead with 14:24 left to play. The second, coming with 12:02 to play, gave East a 4-2 lead.

“I played a different position today,” Zaccaria said. “I played back a little more and it seemed to work for us.”

But the Jacks didn’t go down without a fight as Grayson Dolata answered back with two goals of his own. The second trimmed the Bulldogs lead to 4-3 with 7:23, but that’s as close as the Jacks would get.

Bulldogs coach Rolfe Friedenberg was happy with his squad’s effort.

“We make the point all the time that I don’t care how much talent you have if you’re not busting your butt and working hard,” he said. “In the second half it seems like they had more of a fire under the butts to want to play.”

For the Jacks (2-7 NFL, 2-9) it’s another hard fought, one goal loss. And another night where they are left shaking their heads wondering what must they do to win close games.

“I feel like, not this game so much, but for the most part we were right there,” NT coach Tom Stefanucci said. “It’s there for the

taking.”

Carli Leo won the deciding match in third singles in three sets to earn her fourth win on the season and help the Wolverines (4-7 NFL) to their first road win. The Falls also swept doubles play while Gretchen Wringler and Jessica Robbins won in first and second singles, respectively, to lead the Lady Jacks (4-7 NFL).

The Bulldogs’ Zach Jakes and Blue Devils’ Brett Phillips split medalist honors with 1-over rounds of 37 at Brighton Golf Course. Ricky Shotwell also shot a 38 for East (12-1 NFL) while Mike Davern and Chuckie Panetinto chipped in a pair of 39s. West falls to 2-11 on the year.

Medalist Zach Dubuc shot a 40 and Noah Wrazen added a 42 to help the Falcons improve to 10-3 at Deerwood. Alex Behr and Devin Donohue each had a 41 for the Lumberjacks (6-7 NFL).

Kyle Burns’ 10 kills and Adam Heftka’s 24 assists helped the Vikings (7-0 NFL) stay undefeated in league play. The Blue Devils fall to 1-6.

Dylan Bobernus had eight kills and Sam Mattheus also had eight kills to go with seven blocks to lead the Falcons (3-7, 3-4 NFL) in the 25-18, 26-24, 13-25, 25-21 league win. Austin Hayes chipped in 35 assists in the win while Ryan Fritz’s seven kills and Joe Piotrowski’s six kills and 21 assists led the Lumberjacks (3-4, 3-4 NFL).

Kyle Patterson’s 17 kills and Michael Crawford’s 35 assists led a back-and-forth effort as the Bulldogs (7-2, 5-2 NFL) came away with the 21-25, 25-18, 32-30, 16-25, 25-16 league win. The Lions fall to 5-2.
