Tonawanda News — Tonawanda’s Adam Weir signed his letter of intent to play basketball at Canisius College on Wednesday morning at a signing ceremony held in the Canisius High School library.
Weir led the Crusaders to a second-consecutive Manhattan Cup in the Monsignor Martin Association last season and his 18 points and seven rebounds per game were best on the squad.
The 6-foot-4 Weir said signing at Canisius is a dream come true.
“As a young kid you set your goals on what you want to do when you’re older and a Division 1 scholarship was one of those things,” he said. “Feels good to get that off my list.”
Weir is an athletic and speedy shooting guard with a constant motor that allows him to put pressure on opposing defenses for all four quarters.
Crusaders coach Kyle Husband said Weir has an impressive work ethic that’s allowed him to ascend the ranks of local high school basketball. He thinks new Canisius coach Jim Baron is getting a quality player who will contribute right away.
“He’s a special player. He goes 100 miles an hour and he’s tough as nails,” Husband said. “There’s not many people in the state that can stop him and he’s really bought into the weight room. He’s strong inside and outside. When he gets out in the open floor, forget it.”
Weir is excited to join the Canisius program because of the up-tempo and fast-paced style Baron has implemented at the college. He said the style of play will be fun to watch for fans and he’s looking forward to playing in front of them.
Staying close to home was something that Weir never questioned because he’s always felt Buffalo is a great place to live that provides a “nice home place” kind of feel. He’s also excited to continue playing in front of friends and family.
Husband said the buzz around the Crusaders program as the season draws near has energized his team and the fan base. He said Weir is one of the main reasons and his acheivement is the result of years of hard work.
“Throughout his four years he comes in to work every day and is businesslike every day,” Husband said. “He works hard, pushes his teammates and truly cares about winning ... Everybody just loves him and wants to be around him. He’s not outspoken, he’s not goofy — he’s fun to be around and he’s a great kid. I can’t say enough good things ... For him to finally reach one of his goals is just awesome to see.”
