Tonawanda News — For a half Friday night the North Tonawanda boys basketball team was able to stay with Amherst, the defending B2 champions, on the road. But in the end the Tigers had too much firepower and they beat NT, 68-40.
Amherst (1-0) outscored the Jacks (0-1), 26-8 in the third quarter to wrap up the game, but NT coach Ryan Mountain thought his team was right there the rest of the contest.
"We played a very good first half and stood toe to toe with them. We were right there, 24-20 at halftime, but it got away from us in the third quarter," he said. "They made a lot of nice plays, but we made a lot of nice plays for them."
Sophomore forward Chris Woodard finished with seven points, 10 rebounds and three steals for the Jacks. Big man Donovan Book scored a team-high nine points and junior guard Joe Piotrowski finished with five points and seven assists.
Mountain said he anticipates the scoring to pick up in the next few games.
"We're going to get more scoring out of Joe Piotrowski, Christian Lempke and Nehemiah Stone," he said. "To come out of it and only getting 10 points between those three — I don't anticipate that happening too often. We'll give credit to Amherst there."
Jacks senior Ian Gilhousen wasn't available against the Tigers due to injury that will sideline him until late December. The fast forward will help on the glass when he returns, an area that fell off after two quarters for the Jacks in the loss.
Alex Billie scored seven points off the bench and Jake Ferry added four.
