Tonawanda News — St. Joe's and Kenmore West were in mid-season form on Tuesday night, putting on a show for those that attended the contest held at Daemen College.
The two teams fought back and forth in the double-overtime thriller, but it was the Marauders that were able to outlast the Blue Devils, escaping Lumsden gymnasium with a 63-61 victory.
The Marauders (1-0) held an eight-point lead heading into the fourth quarter but the Blue Devils (0-1), on clutch three-point shooting by Alex Price, were able get back into the ball game, including taking a brief lead. St. Joe's coach Mark Simon said he felt lucky to extend the game at the end of regulation.
"We were thrilled to get to overtime. I mean, we were down there for a stretch of regulation," he said. "Then we got some new life in overtime and we tried to go from there."
From there the teams played tough in the overtime periods, but the Maraduers outscored the Blue Devils, 8-6 in extra time to seal the victory.
Louis Oliveri led St. Joe's with 21 points and hit a few timely 3-pointers in the game. Ken West standout Quinton Campbell was outstanding for the Blue Devils, scoring 21 points and hauling in a jaw-dropping 22 rebounds.
Blue Devils coach Mike Meetze was amazed with Campbell's performance.
"He's a force and there's no doubt about it. Every team will game plan for him," Meetze said. "He wasn't getting open looks because they have two or three guys on him. We have to learn when that happens that other guys need to step up. He kept us in the game for long stretches. Twenty-two rebounds — that's controlling the glass right there."
Simon lauded Oliveri's play, saying the senior really stepped up in critical parts of the games for the Marauders.
"Louis can score points in bunches," he said. "He got hot at the end of the second quarter and allowed us to stretch it with three's at end of quarter. He wants to make plays and you need offense, and he wants to be the guy."
Meetze said he hopes his team can learn from its mistakes in the game, despite playing well for stretches — especially in the fourth quarter. The Blue Devils struggled on the boards and little things like that were the teams undoing, according to Meetze.
Price finished with 15 points and Shay Cuadra chipped in with 16. Junior Justin Hollins and senior Jordan Glover each had 12 points for the Marauders.
