BASEBALL: Brooks throws for White Sox

Staff Reports

North Tonawanda native Ricky Brooks faced one batter in spring training action Friday for the Chicago White Sox.

Brooks, who is listed on the active roster for the White Sox Double-A affiliate Birmingham Barons, forced a popout in his brief appearance in Chicago’s 10-7 win over the Los Angeles Angels in a split-squad game in Tempe, Ariz. He was just assigned to Chicago on Friday.

Brooks was one of seven pitchers the White Sox used in the game.

A 2003 graduate of North Tonawanda High School, Brooks had a successful collegiate career at East Carolina University, during which he threw the first nine-inning no-hitter in Conference USA history.

The White Sox selected Brooks in the third round of the 2005 First-Year Player Draft. He spent a couple seasons with Class A Advanced Winston-Salem before making his Double-A pitching debut last summer with the Barons.

He had a 3-1 record in Birmingham with a 2.68 ERA, and struck out 35 batters in 37 innings of work.
