A.J. Roberts and Robbie Seyler both finished with 17 points as the Niagara County Community College men’s basketball team picked up its second victory in as many starts, defeating Cayuga Community College 65-55 in the first round of the Panther Classic at Tompkins-Cortland.
Seyler, a Lewiston-Porter graduate, had just two points at the intermission, but followed with a big second half in lifting the Trailblazers
“We ended up causing quite a few turnovers,” NCCC coach Billy Beilein said. “Then we sucked into a 2-3 zone and they shot themselves right out of the game.”
Cruz Sanchez added eight points for NCCC while Henry Mingo had seven.
That puts the Blazers into this afternoon’s championship game against host Tompkins-Cortland, which defeated Fulton-Montgomery by a 91-86 score.
“I think we’ve got a real good chance as long as we defend well and have poise on offense,” Beilein said.
FOOTBALL
Brockport 48, Buff. State 30
The Brockport Golden Eagles piled up 726 yards of total offense, handing the Bengals a loss in their final outing of the seasn.
Matt Pacana (North Tonawanda) had 12 tackles while Eddie Weiser (Grand Island) added 11 for the Bengals, who finished the season at 2-8.
Women’s volleyball
Toledo 3, Buffalo 1
The Bulls finish the regular season at 15-15 overall and 5-11 in conference play as they head into the Mid-American Conference Tournament after a loss to the Rockets.
The Bulls were led by a dozen kills from Dani Silvers, who was one of four seniors playing in their final match at Alumni Arena.
“I thought we gave a better effort tonight than we had the past few matches, but when you can’t match that with execution, you are still going to fall short,” said head coach Todd Kress.
“I am disappointed for our seniors, but at the same time we have to get right back to work because everyone starts the MAC Tournament with a clean slate. No matter who we play, we will be ready come Tuesday.”
