HS ROUNDUP (Nov. 4): Bowler, KW spikers advance

Ben Bowler had 39 assists and Evan Bullard added 21 kills and 20 digs to lead No. 7 Kenmore West to a 3-0 sweep over 10th-seeded North Tonawanda in Class A boys volleyball prequarterfinal action Tuesday.

West (12-3 overall) won the match with scores of 25-19, 25-22 and 25-19.

For NT, Steve Bzibziak had six kills and four blocks, and Jesse Karcher notched seven kills.

The Blue Devils will travel to No. 2 Lockport in Thursday’s quarterfinals.

6-Niagara-Wheatfield 3, 11-Kenmore East 0

Kyle Henry had 14 kills, 16 assists and three aces to lead the attack for N-W in its 25-21, 25-18, 25-18 sweep.

Also for the Falcons (13-5 overall), Lucas Kowalczyk had seven kills and 22 assists while brothers Shawn and Grant Haseley tallied nine kills apiece. Wheatfield advances to Thursday’s quarterfinal game against third-seeded Sweet Home. East finishes 4-11.

5-Frontier 3, 12-Niagara Falls 0

Tim Drylewski and Billy Chamberlain played well for the Falls in its 25-10, 25-7, 25-15 Class A prequarterfinal loss, according to coach Bill Schmidtke. The Wolverines finished 5-11.

3-Grand Island 3, 14-Will. East 0

Jonas Stalyga had 17 kills, two blocks and one dig to lead Grand Island to a 25-11, 25-18, 25-15 Class B prequarterfinal victory. Tyler Hinaman added two aces, two kills and 31 assists for the Vikings (10-7 overall, 10-5 NFL), who host No. 6 Maryvale in quarterfinal action Thursday.

7-Holland 3, 10-Starpoint 0

Tyler Sieczkarek had seven kills and two blocks and Cody Longwell chipped in four blocks and three kills for Starpoint in its 25-17, 25-15, 25-10 Class B prequarterfinal loss. The Spartans finish with a 7-12 overall record. Holland visits second-seeded Lake Shore in Thursday’s quarterfinals.

Field Hockey

1-Will. South 4, 5-Ken East 0

Rachel Divita, Blair Pembleton, Denisse Lopez and Allison Ferenczy accounted for the scoring for Williamsville South in the Class B semifinal at Amherst. For East (9-9 overall, 8-8 NFL), goalkeeper Sam Attea recorded 10 saves. South improves its overall record to 15-2-1.
