A quartet of local schools won their season-opening Niagara Frontier League wrestling dual meets on Wednesday. Niagara-Wheatfield, Niagara Falls, Lewiston-Porter and Grand Island were all victorious.
The five-time defending champion Falcons beat Kenmore West 52-15 on the strength of five pins. Jim Donner (275), Marcus Popp (96), Joe Tardibuono (145), Antonio Ventry (152) and Angelo Malvestuto (189) each won their matches by pin for N-W (1-0 NFL). Nick Grzeskowiak won a major decision at 140, while sophomore Jake Kelly avenged a pair of previous defeats to Joe Amoia at 171. Dylan Tabiana (119) won by pin for West (0-1).
Niagara Falls 47, Lockport 31
Henry Beaman (112), Irvin Buck (145), Albert Buck (152), Seth O’Harrow (189), Billy Gee (215) and Aeriol Harper (275) picked up pins for the Wolverines, who moved to 1-0 in NFL action. Joe DiFrancesco won by technical fall at 140 for the Falls. For the Lions (0-1), Ivan Cruz (119), David Wilcox (125) and C.J. Ralyea (171) were winners by pinfall.
Lew-Port 43, Ken East 30
Dan Reagan (119), Nick Paul (140), Tom Patti (171), Joe Hill (189), Bashar Srouji (215) and D.J. Marshall (103) all won by pin for the Lancers, who moved to 1-0 in the NFL. Ryan Kroemer’s win by major decision at 96 pounds sealed the win for Lew-Port. For the Bulldogs (0-1), Ethan Kenerson (125), Sam Coho (160) and Mike Fratterigo (275) were winners by pinfall.
Grand Island 51, NT 36
Andy LaLonde (152), Wesley Haynie (160) and Zach Wojnar (130) each won their matches via pin as the Vikings moved to 1-0 in NFL action. GI also had four wins by forfeit. For NT (0-1), Wally Maziarz (145), Tyler Bruce (171) and Ryan Drass (125) were winners by pinfall.
Barker 57, Wilson 21
Chase Wheeler (112) and Brandon Culverwell (160) picked up wins by pin for the Lakemen, but it wasn’t enough in their Niagara-Orleans League opener. Mitch Thursh won by major decision at 130. Barker (1-0 N-O) had eight pins on its way to the win.
Lake Shore 47, Starpoint 23
Bill Drexler picked up a win by pin at 189, but it wasn’t enough for the Spartans in their ECIC II loss. Starpoint falls to 0-1. Lake Shore (1-0) notched five pins.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Lackawanna 58, O’Hara 50
Kelly Walsh led the Hawks with 15 points but it wasn’t enough as Lackawanna went on to win the Hutch Tech tournament. Leah McDonell added 11 points for O’Hara. Walsh and Katie Pilecki were named to the all-tournament team for the Hawks (2-2). Walsh hit the game-winning bucket, a 3-pointer, in O’Hara’s 27-26 win over Akron in the first round of the tournament on Tuesday.

Tonawanda 7, Maritime 0
Austin Fitzpatrick shot a 246-668 at Thruway Lanes to lead the Warriors to a non-league victory in their season opener. Josh Barber had a 220-639 and THS won the pin count 4,535-2,763. Tyshone Tibbs led Maritime with a 251-572.
