COLLEGE ROUNDUP: Baker’s half dozen sparks NU softball (April 12)

Lisa Baker slugged six hits Wednesday in Niagara women’s softball doubleheder sweep over Colgate, 13-1 and 8-5.

Baker hit .857 with a double in the series for Niagara (8-12). Colgate dropped to 12-17.

In the opener, NU’s Felicia Coffey went 4-for-4 with a home run, three runs scored and three RBIs.

Senior Nicole Sum was 2-for-2 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Brook Viola picked up her fifth win of the season, tossing a two-hitter with five strikeouts.

In the nightcap, Ashley Bognar (Cardinal O’Hara) hit a homer and Baker added an RBI single. Tiffany McCrory recorded her third win of the season in the circle, striking out three. Katie Gleiser (Maryvale) recorded her first collegiate save.

NCCC ladies sweep

Erin Whitehead (Kenmore East) pitched a pair of gems Wednesday as the Niagara County Community College women’s softball team swept host Finger Lakes CC by scores of 13-0 and 14-4.

In the opener, Whitehead threw a one-hitter with five strikeouts. At the plate, the Lady Trailblazers (2-2) were led by Lisa Batt (Starpoint) and Cassi Carlson (Grand Island) who each went 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Alyssa Nocera and Lizzy Taibi (Lewiston-Porter) each went 2-for-3 with two runs scored.

In the nightcap, Whitehead threw a five-hitter with five strikeouts and added three hits at the plate. Batt was 2-for-3 with a triple and three runs scored.

The Lakers dropped to 1-4. NCCC resumes action at 1 p.m. today at Mercyhurst Northeast.

Bulls fall to Orange, 6-5

Despite scoring five runs over the last three innings, Buffalo’s women’s softball team dropped a 6-5 game to visiting Syracuse on Wednesday.

Colleen Greene plated Samantha Gaetano for UB’s first run in the bottom of the fifth.

Marcy Hansen smacked a two-run single an inning later. Pinch runner Ashley Turner and Erin Zilka (3-for-4) scored an inning later.
