ROCHESTER — Former Lockport High School scholar athlete Cory Brownsten cracked a two-run home run in Monroe Community College baseball team’s 6-4 victory over Lackawanna College last week.
The win propels the Tribunes to the NJCAA World Series for the first time since 1989. The series begins this Saturday and runs through June 1 in Millington, Tenn.
Brownsten’s two-run blast over the left field fence in the bottom of the fourth inning gave Monroe a 4-3 lead. Two innings later Brownsten scored the Tribunes’ final run on a base hit off the bat of Shawn Bailey (Webster-Schroeder).
Brownsten, the recipient of MCC’s athletic excellence award, has played for MUNY AAA’s Leibs team since 2005. He has also played AAABA the last two years with Meridan Medical and each year has competed in the national tournament in Johnstown, Penn.
At Monroe, Brownsten, a catcher, first baseman and designated hitter, is batting .322 with three home runs, 18 RBIs and an on-base percentage of .478. In conference play, he was a stellar .750 hitter with a home run, while reaching base 14 times in 16 at bats for an on-base percentage of .875.
Brownsten’s coach, Dudley “Skip” Bailey (415-191 career record at MCC) was named 2007 Region III Coach of the Year.
MCC (35-11) went a perfect 3-0 in district play this year and did not make an error the entire weekend. The Tribunes came within one game of the NJCAA World Series in 2006.
