North Tonawanda’s Joanna Fretthold and Shaina Bunker were among several Tonawanda-area softball players named first team All-Niagara Frontier League all-stars during the league’s year-end meeting.
A senior, Fretthold filled in admirably at shortstop when the Lady Jacks presumed starter at the position, Julie Harmon, injured her knee before the season began. Fretthold led NT in most offensive categories, including batting .417 this past season.
A sophomore catcher, Bunker batted .359 for NT with a .467 on-base percentage. She also hit seven triples and three home runs to lead the Lady Jacks in extra base hits.
Also Rounding out the first-teamers are Kenmore West’s five-year starters Danielle Frye and Jenna Rickan, along with Kenmore East pitcher Kristen Deschenes.
Frye, a shortstop, hit .411 with 12 RBIs for the Blue Devils, while Rickan batted .431 and stole 16 bases.
Niagara Gazette Softball Player of the Year Caitlin Attfield of Niagara-Wheatfield earned Most Outstanding Player honors. The freshman shortstop was also recently named third team all-state in Class AA.
Also for N-W, junior hurler Kelly Bourque was named the NFL’s Co-Pitcher of the Year with reigning award winner Holly Conte of Niagara Falls.
N-W coach Eric Belter was named the league’s Coach of the Year after helping the Falcons to a share of the NFL title with West. Lockport earned the team sportsmanship award.
Starpoint’s Danielle Lanternier was a first team all-ECIC II selection.
