HS WRESTLING: Falcons pin down another title

KENMORE — The big boys from Niagara-Wheatfield came through in a big way Saturday.

Niagara-Wheatfield swept the four heaviest weight classes and added another champion at 125 at the Section VI Class AAAA Championships hosted by Kenmore West.

And despite finishing second to Clarence in the team scoring at the event, the Falcons clinched a fifth straight Section VI large schools championship with the performance, according to coach Rick Sweney.

“That’s huge for us,” the coach said of the title. “That’s always our goal. We’ve got six NFL titles in a row and five in the section. We’re very proud of that.”

He was also proud of the efforts turned in by Jake Kelly (171), Angelo Malvestuto (189), Adam Donner (215) and Jim Donner (285). The big bodies each brought home titles in different ways.

Kelly clipped Nick Bannister of Frontier, 9-7, in an action-packed match in the finals to start the run of champions in black and white. Malvestuto followed that with an impressive 36-second pin of Lancaster’s Mike Gerber.

Then Adam Donner outlasted Lancaster’s Daniel Kubiak 4-2 in overtime, followed by older brother Jim Donner’s easy 11-2 major decision victory over Brandon Lathrop of Kenmore West.

“We all work with each other every day,” the younger Donner said of the big guys. “The drilling that we do in practice makes all the difference. When we win it feels great because you know that you helped them out and they helped you out along the way. Hopefully we can continue that and take it to states.”

N-W also got a title from Joe Malvestuto at 125. He pinned North Tonawanda’s Ryan Drass in two minutes.

Ken West’s Dylan Caruana was named Most Outstanding Wrestler after beating top-seeded Daiquann Burney of Sweet Home for the 119-pound title.

Niagara Falls’ Irvin Buck remained unbeaten this season with a forfeit victory at 145 pounds over North Tonawanda’s Wally Maziarz. Teammate Joe DiFrancesco, meanwhile, was pinned in the 140-pound championship tilt.

Lockport’s Mike Feeney was the 130-pound champion after beating Williamsville North’s Austin Berube.

NT’s Tyler Bruce was runner-up at 152 pounds.
