NORTH TONAWANDA
Senior center hosts talk on services
WNY Independent Living Inc. will be at the North Tonawanda Senior Center, 110 Goundry St., from 9 a.m. to noon Friday.
Dave Edgerton, an Independent Living specialist, will be available for questions on case management, benefits and advocacy services for people with disabilities.
The public is welcome.
OLC Altar Society to meet
The Altar Society of Our Lady of Czestochowa Church, Center Avenue, North Tonawanda, will meet at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, in the church hall, a change from the regular time.
Hostesses will be Gerry Pusch, Pat Sierzenga, Judy Smolka, Jane Tylec and Chris Tylec. New members are welcome
Freshman orientation set at NTHS
North Tonawanda High School will have an orientation for current eighth-graders at 7 p.m. Thursday in the alumni student activity center at the high school on Meadow Drive.
The program will assist students with the transition to high school. After the main program, representatives of various sports, clubs and academic departments will be available.

K of C hosts World Feed the Hungry Day
The Knights of Columbus, Madonna Council along with the North Tonawanda Catholic Club and Educators Totally Committed have designated the first Friday in February as the World Feed The Hungry Day.
Between 3 and 7 p.m. Friday, anyone interested in helping those in need is encouraged to drop off non-perishable food products at the K of C, 755 Erie Ave., North Tonawanda.
The collection will be continue each Friday during Lent with donated goods given to local organizations.
The Boy Scouts and the Madonna Council Squires will be assist on Friday.

Writing workshop hosted at library
A short story writing workshop, presented by Linda Lavid, will take place at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Kenilworth Branch Library, 318 Montrose Ave., Town of Tonawanda.

Lifeguarding course set at aquatic center
A lifeguarding course will be offered from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Feb. 15 to 19 at the Town of Tonawanda Aquatic and Fitness Center.
The cost is $140.94, of which $80 is due upon registration and $60.94 is due the first day of class.
The class is open to anyone age 15 or older and includes lifeguard training, first aid, CPR, oxygen administration and AED training.

AREA
Kidney disease class set
The chronic kidney disease management class, entitled “Take Control of Kidney Disease through Knowledge,” will take place at 5 p.m. Feb. 9, at the National Kidney Foundation offices, 300 Delaware Ave., Suite 101, Buffalo.
The program is for individuals who have been diagnosed in the early stages of kidney disease.
The 90-minute class is taught by a registered dietitian.
The cost is $35 and is covered for the majority of Independent Health, Univera, and BlueCross BlueShield members.

The Community Education and Referral program of the Mental Health Association in Niagara County Inc. will offer free support group facilitator training twice in March.
Training will be from 1 to 4 p.m. Tuesday and 5:30 to 8 p.m. March 31 at the Wheatfield Community Center, 2790 Church Road, Wheatfield.

Tonawanda Free Methodist Church, 207 Grove St., City of Tonawanda, will host Soup & Devotions at 6 p.m. Wednesday with tomato corn soup featured.

Gregory Kinal will present a program on “Impact of the ’50s” at the 7 p.m. meeting Wednesday of the Historical Society of the Tonawandas in the community room at city hall, Niagara Street. The program will feature a look at the 1950s in America with images of everyday life, fads, political figures, dress styles and celebrities.
All are invited.

Job applications for City of Tonawanda residents interested in seasonal work are available in the city clerk’s office at city hall.
Positions include laborers, pool/playground attendants, lifeguards, park attendants and Gateway Harbor attendants.
Anyone interested in a seasonal laborer position and available full time by April 15 should return completed applications to the clerk’s office by March 31.
All other applications must be returned by April 15. All applicants must be residents of Tonawanda and at least 16 years old by June 1.

The Buffalo Society of Artists is bringing back its historic “Thumb Box Exhibition” which features small works by members of the society from Saturday through March 26 at Partners in Art Gallery, 74 Webster St., North Tonawanda.
A reception from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday will open the show. All are invited.
Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.

“Princess and the Frog” will be the featured movie at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Riviera Theatre, 67 Webster St., North Tonawanda as part of the Saturday Family Film series sponsored by the YWCA Tonawandas and the theater.
Tickets are $2. A $1 raffle ticket or a non-perishable food item for the YWCA food pantry buys a chance to win a movie poster.
