TONAWANDA

Blood drive offers ‘Firehouse Chili’

People can enjoy “Firehouse Chili” when they donate blood at a community blood drive from 2 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the City of Tonawanda Fire Headquarters, 44 William St.

First-time blood donors are encouraged to donate. To be eligible, people must be 17 years old or older and weigh 110 pounds or more.

To reserve a time slot, call 1-800-GIVE-LIFE. Walk-ins are welcome.

The meal includes Chief Stuart’s firehouse chili, Anne’s sausage and beef recipe and Stacy’s famous bean-less chili.



AARP plan holiday party at meeting

Tonawanda AARP Chapter 4574 will meet at 12:30 p.m. Thursday at the VFW on Elgin Street, City of Tonawanda.

Final plans for the Christmas party on Dec. 10 will be discussed. Payment must be made at this meeting.

Lunch committee members are Ruth Tamberlin, Mary Lashaway, Peggy Marohn, Elena Horwitz, Rita Brompton and Rita Daniels.

Members are asked to bring items for the food pantry and small toys, hats and mittens for the needy.



NORTH TONAWANDA

Fun Day offers games, information

A National Family Fun Day, with games, face painting, fire department representatives, food, balloons and information on veterans’ and other community services will take place from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday at Sikora American Legion Post, 950 Payne Ave., North Tonawanda.

The event is sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary of Sikora Post. Admission is a non-perishable food item for the North Tonawanda Food Pantry.



NTHS classes of ’39-’44 plan dinner

Members of the North Tonawanda High School classes of 1939 to 1944 are invited to a dinner at 6 tonight at Pane’s Restaurant, 984 Payne Ave., North Tonawanda.

Spaghetti served at Renaissance Club

The Renaissance Club of North Tonawanda will be serving spaghetti from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the club, 252 Vandervoort St.

Salad, homemade soups, and desserts are available for an additional charge. The club is opened to the public.



Defensive driving course planned

Empire Safety Council will offer at defensive driving course from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Allstate, 834 Nash Road, North Tonawanda.

Artists’ reception, show set at Carnegie

The Buffalo Society of Artists will host a reception and slide presentation of new members’ artwork from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday at the Carnegie Art Center, 240 Goundry St., North Tonawanda.

    Call 693-1199 if you plan to attend. Donation is $5 for adults, $4 for those age 60 and older, and free for children under age 10.

  • BULLETIN: Events published March 6, 2010 Gregory Kinal will present a program on “Impact of the ’50s” at the 7 p.m. meeting Wednesday of the Historical Society of the Tonawandas in the community room at city hall, Niagara Street. The program will feature a look at the 1950s in America with images of everyday life, fads, political figures, dress styles and celebrities.

  • BULLETIN: Events published March 5, 2010 Job applications for City of Tonawanda residents interested in seasonal work are available in the city clerk’s office at city hall.

    Positions include laborers, pool/playground attendants, lifeguards, park attendants and Gateway Harbor attendants.

    Anyone interested in a seasonal laborer position and available full time by April 15 should return completed applications to the clerk’s office by March 31.

    All other applications must be returned by April 15. All applicants must be residents of Tonawanda and at least 16 years old by June 1.

  • BULLETIN: Events published March 3, 2010 The Buffalo Society of Artists is bringing back its historic “Thumb Box Exhibition” which features small works by members of the society from Saturday through March 26 at Partners in Art Gallery, 74 Webster St., North Tonawanda.

    A reception from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday will open the show. All are invited.

    Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.

  • BULLETIN: Events published Feb. 26, 2010 “Princess and the Frog” will be the featured movie at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Riviera Theatre, 67 Webster St., North Tonawanda as part of the Saturday Family Film series sponsored by the YWCA Tonawandas and the theater.

    Tickets are $2. A $1 raffle ticket or a non-perishable food item for the YWCA food pantry buys a chance to win a movie poster.
