Best Fitness to hold fundraiser

Tonawanda News — Tonawanda’s Best Fitness is holding a free, open workout class this Saturday and will be accepting donations to go toward breast cancer research.

All proceeds from donations and purchases of key-tags, bracelets, t-shirts and paper ribbons will go to the American Cancer Society.

“It is a great cause and we are trying to help out as much as we can,” Jay Garrow, Best Fitness membership manager said.

The class Saturday, Body Pump will focus on weight training. The event will be held from 8 a.m. to noon and is part of a month long effort to take part in Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

“We really went all out this month,” Garrow said. “We covered the gym in pink, are selling items and are really taking part.”

Representatives from the American Cancer Society will also be on site Saturday to spread the word about the cause and their organization.

According to the National Cancer Institute, exercising four or more hours a week may decrease hormone levels and help lower the risk of breast cancer — all the more reason for a gym to take part in fighting the disease.

And pproximately one in eight women will develop invasive breast cancer over her lifetime. In 2011 an estimated 230,480 new cases were diagnosed in women and approximately 2,140 cases in men.

“This is an area where we can truly make a difference,” Best Fitness Vice President of Personal Training Karli Taylor said.

Saturday’s class is a free weight session, set to music.

“It’s really cool,” Garrow said. “You load your own weight and it’s a total body workout, there are lots of repetitions. And it changes every 12 weeks so your body never gets used to it.”

Best Fitness has many fundraising events year round, including events for Wounded Warriors.

Best Fitness is located at 2309 Eggert Road, Town of Tonawanda.
