Tonawanda News — The Kenmore Village Improvement Society will be kicking off its year-long program, Get Fit Kenmore, with an wellness event Saturday.
The kick-off event includes family ice skating outside at Mang Park, health screenings, demonstrations, giveaways, health evaluations, refreshments and special offers from local businesses.
Participants will be required to help create a life size Kenmore Tree of Health by writing their health goal on a paper leaf. The tree will be displayed throughout the year at various local businesses, and in a little over a year, the KVIS will be holding a celebration in which residents can find their leaf and see how they did.
The event will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Cultural Center on Mang Avenue between Wilbur Avenue and Military Road. The program is free of charge and open to anyone who wants to come.
Foster said they wanted to start the event in February to help those who may be losing sight of their New Year’s resolutions.
“We learned that people start their health plans in January, and usually by Valentine’s Day, it falls by the wayside,” Foster said. “So we thought maybe if we start it now, we can catch people when things maybe haven’t worked out.”
Many other Get Fit Kenmore events are planned for the year, too.
“We have a coordinator for youth, and another for seniors,” she said. “There will be a Legos consortium, a women’s self defense class, and a course on dealing with chronic illness.”
The KVIS 5K race on Sept. 21 is also part of the program. Before the event, the race director, Patti Pembleton, of Custom Tee, will be running training courses for kids, experienced runners, and walkers.
Foster said the year-long initiative was inspired by the organization’s 5th anniversary in May.
“We wanted to give something special to our community for our anniversary,” she said. “Something that could give meaning to people on a very personal scale. This will be for all ages, different kinds of wellness ... and the majority of the events are free.”
