Tonawanda News — The off-duty Erie County Sheriff’s Deputy who allegedly hit a motorcyclist while driving intoxicated appeared in Amherst Town Court Thursday afternoon.
Michael Haug, 28, of Kenmore, waived his hearing before Judge Mark Farrell. The case will now proceed to a grand jury.
Haug is accused of rear-ending a motorcycle at a red at Sheridan Drive and Bailey Avenue around 4 a.m. Aug. 4, throwing the motorcyclist, David Colosimo, 37, of Tonawanda, onto the road. Colosimo suffered serious head injuries and was in the Erie County Medical Center’s intensive care unit after the accident, but has since been discharged.
Shortly after the incident, Haug pleaded not guilty to charges of vehicular assault, DWI and improper speed. He refused a breath test, but police obtained a court order for a blood draw due to the severity of the incident.
Haug was released on $25,000 bail.
He is a five-year veteran of the force and was suspended without pay after the incident.
