TOWN OF TONAWANDA — A fire at a vacant home on Parker Boulevard near Kenmore Avenue sent five fire companies to the scene and took more than two   hours to extinguish.

Ellwood Fire Chief Jamie Olson said the blaze started in the basement of the home, which has been vacant for roughly two years,   then spread into the kitchen.

A large amount of “clutter” in the home made it difficult to get it under control, according to Olson. No one was injured.   The cause of the fire and damage estimates will be released later this week.

Drugged driver causes accident with son in car

Niagara County Sheriff’s deputies arrested a man for driving under the influence of drugs Tuesday after he allegedly caused   two traffic accidents — with his 11-year-old son in the car.

Pedro Gay-Carbonell, 58, was charged with Leandra’s Law DWI, driving while intoxicated-drugs, endangering the welfare of a child and failure to keep right.

Deputies were called to Ward Road near Niagara Falls Boulevard in Wheatfield at 1:21 p.m. Tuesday for a traffic accident. While investigating the incident, deputies determined Gay-Carbonell was under the influence of unidentified drugs. As they were processing the scene, a second motorist arrived and told deputies Gay-Carbonell had hit him while driving on Saunders Settlement Road in Lewiston a short time prior.

No injuries were reported in either accident.

Gay-Carbonell was remanded to the Niagara County Jail in lieu of $750 police bail, where he awaits an appearance in Wheatfield Town Court.
