Tonawanda News — TOWN OF TONAWANDA — The town board passed a resolution at the regular meeting Monday night that will continue rehabilitation efforts at the former site of Polymer Applications, Inc.
The resolution approved the Erie County Industrial Development Agency to proceed with the demolition of an unsafe building at the site.
A $5.5 million project to rehabilitate the property, located at 3445 River Road, began in February of 2011, and was largely complete in April of 2012.
The project included excavating soil from a biotreatment cell at the site that contained high levels of contamination and capping the site with clean soil, as well as the demolishing of buildings, removal of equipment and disposing of groundwater monitoring wells.
According to the DEC, an estimated 15,500 tons of contaminated biotreatment cell soil existed at the site at depths greater than 2 feet.
In another matter, the board also authorized Supervisor Anthony Caruana to execute an agreement with Wm. Schutt Associates, P.C. to complete engineering work for the waterline improvement project for Delaware Road, which will begin in the spring.
The work will take place both north and south of Sheridan Drive, from Brighton Road to Deerhurst Park Boulevard.
“Construction near Kenmore West will take place after school is out for the year,” Councilman Joseph Emminger said. “We will be in the ground and out by the end of next year.”
In other news, Director of Water Resources Ken Maving said the two low bids for the purchase of an air compressor for the waste water treatment plant were rejected as they were incomplete or did not meet equipment specifications.
“We ran the decision through the legal department,” Maving said.
Instead, the bid award went to Glauber Equipment Corp., which will receive $53,936 for the equipment.
